I'm going to teach you my very own strategies for getting local customers. They all involve me using my business card as a tool. So, get yourself a good business card.

Strategy #1: Avoid Shoving

Please, never shove my business card in people's faces. (You're way better than that.) When I first started my business I was really excited and probably over-enthusiastic, but I never wanted to be one of those people.

Strategy #2: Be on the lookout for the need

One day after work, I stopped at a local business for a networking event. After exchanging introductions with a woman who worked there, she said, "Oh we're looking for a graphic designer. So, I handed her my card.

It worked. After I handed a woman my business card, she gave it to her boss. We met about me doing design work for them and then he contacted me 3 months later. The beginning of his email read "I've had your card on my desk since we met, and we're ready to move forward." It's been over a year and I'm still doing project management and graphic design work for their company.
Strategy #3: Say thank you

Saying thank you can never hurt you. I included my business card in a handwritten thank you card after I had a meeting with a potential customer in May of 2012. She owns a local holistic fitness studio and we were introduced through a mutual connection -- so I hadn't met her in person until our initial meeting.

She's been my customer ever since. It's been almost 2 years.
Strategy #4: When asked, be ready

When the light turns green, you go. When someone asks you for a business card, have one ready. I attended a local networking event and I was drinking a beer while talking to some peeps in the local startup community. One of them asked for my business card.

We became Facebook friends, and six months later he sent me a message on Facebook inviting me to tour his new office, so I went without any expectations. When I was there, he introduced me as his print designer. (We hadn't even talked shop yet and I'll give you one guess as to WHAT I designed for him).

The business card is a tool that helps your customers get to know what you're doing and is a physical thing. Hand it out when appropriate. It works - so make sure you have an original design. (Not a template design.)
