The Real Test Of A Drummer (4 Tips For Playing Live)

There are many ways to fake your drumming skills (or lack there of) but I think the real test of your skills is playing live. In this video I go down 4 tips I have for not looking like an idiot on stage:
1. Play at 75% complexity. You are there to help the band. Stop trying too hard to impress everyone. When you play stuff that just beyond your skill level, when you miss that fill or mess up that drum beat, it makes you look stupid. Chill out. Stay within your circle of competence.
2. Turn up your monitor. If you can't hear, its really hard to play on time. Which makes you: look like an idiot.
3. Warm up before the gig. This is a must. It sounds simple because it is. Just do it.
4. Take it easy on yourself. You messed up on stage. Don't worry about it. Just keep playing. You'll get better and better over time.
