Ghost fish. This three mile creek is born full-size where it emerges out of the rock pile below the twisted rock summits. It disappears at full size three miles later as it slides underground through another rock pile a thousand feet above the briny lake. A mythical Great Basin creek… with an elusive fish capable of forty pounds in bigger waters. A fish of invisibility. I sampled the length of this creek and never saw fin nor tail, shadow nor scale. Twenty thousand years ago the creek would have connected to Lake Bonneville; fostering speculation that the creek may have been home to Bonneville Cutthroat trout. No one knows who or when, but roughly eighty to a hundred years ago someone slipped an exotic Cutthroat into a neighboring creek where the trout lingered after its home waters were depleted of this specific strain. This hidden Great Basin creek, in this other-worldly environment, served as a nursery for the trans-located fish, nurturing a brood stock for its home waters flowing off the Sierras. However, for me, for now, it remains a ghost fish.
