Disclaimers
Water isn’t always romantic in Indian films. For instance, rain during a funeral could represent a loss or existential dread. But I focused on the “romance” angle. I might talk more about nature symbols in a subsequent video comparing love and lust songs.

I use “Indian” and “South Asian” interchangeably because I believe that the themes that I discuss extend beyond the Indian subcontinent to places such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and perhaps the Middle East.

Rivers and oceans can also represent longing and heartbreak in that lovers could live on either side. Perhaps, they lack a boat!
