Описание к видео Walk around the Woman's Pavilion - 1968 World’s Fair

December 2025 walk around the Woman's Pavilion on the site of the 1968 World’s Fair - HemisFair 68’.

The area known today as the Hemisfair District was the site of the official 1968 World's Fair - HemisFair 68'. The Women's Pavilion was the second time in Expo history where a Fair featured a pavilion dedicated to women. This was the only pavilion at HemisFair 68' which was fully funded by private contributions only. During the early planning stages, memberships were sold at $10 and found participation from women in 49 U.S. States and 11 other countries.

The building for the pavilion was designed by San Antonio based architect Cyrus Wagner in a multi-level design. Unlike most buildings built for a world expo which are temporary and intended to be demolished after the fair is over, this one was built as a permanent structure. The building was in part designed for its post-fair intention to serve as a Student Union building for the proposed University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). UTSA was the exit strategy for the site prior to its final choice of location north of town. In constructing the building as a permanent structure it worked to meet identical requirements from the U.S. Urban Renewal Agency & the Bureau International Expositions (BIE) that a percentage of structures be permeant with a post-fair use.

During the six month run of HemisFair 68' the pavilion welcomed many dignitaries including First Lady of the United States - Lady Bird Johnson & Princess Grace of Monaco. Since the decision was made to locate UTSA north of town the building never experienced it's post-fair intent. After the fair closed the building was eventually transferred to the UT system and for many years served as storage & support for the Texas Pavilion which became UTSA's - Institute of Texan Cultures.

As of December 2025, the building was used as support / storage by both the City of San Antonio & the new Hemisfair.
