Determined Family in Search of Epilepsy Treatment

Malaena Cariño lives with her whānau in Taranaki, and was just seven months old when she had her first tonic-clonic seizure. Now aged 12, she has received an official diagnosis that confirms a very rare genetic mutation is causing her epilepsy. After years of trial and error with different medications - none of which have been effective long-term - parents Gerry and Anthony feel they have reached the end of the road. One treatment option they have yet to try is Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), however the waitlist for a VNS device is long, and getting accepted for treatment is not an easy task.
