When they feel threatened, instead of displaying aggression, ball pythons exhibit a unique defensive behavior—curling into a tight ball with their head tucked in the center—hence their common name. This passive defense mechanism is a reflection of their naturally timid disposition. In the wild, they are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the early morning and late evening hours, which is when they hunt small mammals and birds. Ball pythons are ambush predators that use their heat-sensing pits, located along their upper lip, to detect the body heat of warm-blooded prey. Once prey is located, they strike quickly and constrict it, using muscular coils to suffocate their target before swallowing it whole.
