A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Durham.
The Lindisfarne Gospels are coming to the North East, and to commemorate this momentous occasion, Durham's Gala Theatre have teamed up with Visit County Durham to create this humorous dash through the most significant moments in the last 1400 years of North East history. All in under two hours.

This irreverent romp through the region's past takes in everything from the Vikings and some half-hearted pillaging to the creation of Durham Cathedral, a rather ghostly St Cuthbert, and even the Battle of Hastings.

Written by Tyneside writers Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, best known for their regional, national and international hit comedies Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather, Dirty Dusting and Amazing Grace, this is an hilarious and eccentric look at our shared history.

The play is directed by Gareth Tudor-Price, former Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre Company, and best known for his work on classic stage comedies, Bouncers, Up N Under and Cooking With Elvis.

With 390 cows, a load of monks and a big important dusty book, this fast moving play has just three actors playing 39 different characters, including a hoard of Vikings and a dancing book. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham is possibly the most efficient and hilarious way to catch up on 1400 years of local history!

The Lindisfarne Gospels and St Cuthbert Gospel will be on loan from the British Library in world-class exhibition facilities on Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1 July to 30 September 2013. www.lindisfarnegospels.com
