After several days of intense downpours and thunderstorms, I ventured out for a two night trip to Giant City state park and nearby Carbondale. After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, I hit the trailhead. The Red Cedar Trail is a 12 mile loop trail that can be hiked in a single day by trail runners in about 5-6 hours, or backpacked as a traditional overnight trip with a campground about 6 miles into the trail. Most hikers approach the hike in the counter clockwise direction, following the path to the right. For those day hikers who want to see the Red Cedar falls, a few miles of hiking clockwise on the trail to the left will get you there.

I met a bunch of hikers along the trail during this trip. I ran into a group of four ladies from Nashville, two of whom were avid hikers, and two were brand new to backpacking. They sprinted fast along the trail. I also crossed paths with a BoyScout & Venture Crew group from Edwardsville, who were preparing for Philmont scout camp in the summer. Somehow, despite being behind me on trail at one point, they bypassed me and were already set up at camp when I arrived. I’m convinced they took a shortcut. I also crossed paths with a couple of solo hikers. One was a backpacker, and one was a trail runner.

I tried out a couple of pieces of new gear on this trip. Among these were the Nemo Tensor sleep pad, the Durston Xmid Pro 1 trekking pole shelter, and the Vaucluse Gear backpack ventilation accessory.

In the 2nd video, I came across an abandoned car in the woods, was in awe of the beauty of the Red Cedar Falls, and found my way back to the Giant City campground, where I departed for the Giant Lodge to enjoy a fried chicken dinner before heading back home.
