Audi baut in Zusammenarbeit mit der Firma SolarFuel, dem Fraunhofer Institut in Kassel und dem Energieriesen EWE vier Offshore-Windkraftanlagen. Die Energie wird ins normale Stromnetz eingespeist. Die Power, die nicht im Netz benötigt wird, wird in einem speziellen Kraftwerk zur Elektrolyse verwendet. Bei diesem Vorgang wird Wasser aufgespaltet. Es entsteht Sauer- und Wasserstoff. Der Wasserstoff wird zur Methanisierung verwendet, also mit CO2 verbunden, wodurch synthetisches Erdgas entsteht. So genanntes e-Gas („E" für erneuerbar). Dieses Erdgas wird ins Gasnetz eingespeist.

2020 sollen 600.000 Gasfahrzeuge von Audi auf den Straßen sein. Für zehn Prozent davon könnte man nach derzeitigem Planungsstand das nötige e-Gas liefern. Aber letztlich ist es nur ein Austauschgeschäft. Denn die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ein Auto tatsächlich mit e-Gas fährt, tendiert gegen null. Man kann ins Gasnetz zwar eine gewisse Menge e-Gas einspeisen, aber nicht gezielt in Autos tanken. Das ist deswegen ein Problem, weil Audi für das e-Gas gerne die Anerkennung als Biokraftstoff hätte, was dem Fahrer steuerliche Vorteile brächte. Nur lässt sich nicht steuern, welche Art Erdgas in den Tanks landet. Eine praktikable Lösung für dieses Problem gibt es noch nicht.

In cooperation with SolarFuel, Fraunhofer Institute and EWE, Audi is builing four offshore wind turbines. The energy will be used in the normal energy-system. The power, which is not required, will be used in a special plant for electrolysis. During this process, water will be split to oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is used to methanation: the hydrogen will be combined with CO2. That is, how you get synthetic natural gas. So-called E-Gas. This gas is fed into the gas grid.

In 2020, 600,000 gas-powered cars from Audi are planned to be on the streets. Ten percent of it (60.000) could be powered with E-gas. But ultimately it's just a replacement-business. Because the chance that a car will actually be running with e-gas tends towards zero (because of the high amount of natural gas in the system). You can inject the E-Gas into the gas-network, but you have no garanty, that it will be used for Audi cars. But this is important for Audi. Because Audi want E-gas to be calles "Biofuel", so that drivers will receive tax advantages. But they just can not be controlled, the type of gas, that ends up in the gas tank.
