Watch: In this video, First Languages Australia Committee Member, Theresa Sainty (Pakana) walks through the history and impact of colonisation on Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders languages and the importance of FLA in securing immediate and long term impact in the protection, revitalisation and restoration of Australia's Indigenous languages.

Theresa has worked extensively with the Tasmanian Department of Education (DoE) Aboriginal Education Services (AES), where she co-developed and provided Aboriginal cultural awareness training and produced several curriculum resources. Theresa is an Aboriginal Linguistic Consultant for the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) and has been working in the palawa kani Language Program since 1997.

ABOUT TE ARATINI FESTIVAL OF INDIGENOUS & TRIBAL IDEAS

Te Aratini Festival of Indigenous & Tribal Ideas is World Expo’s first ever Indigenous led and government supported event of its kind. First held from 17-19 November 2021 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre during Expo’s Tolerance & Inclusivity Week, it will now have a place in all mini and major World Expositions under the custodianship of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) the governing body of all World Expos.

Te Aratini (pron. Tear Arda-tin-knee) conveys the idea of many converging pathways and symbolises the coming together of Indigenous & Tribal peoples from all corners of the world to honour their ancestors and design the future together.

Ara Tī (pron. Arda – Tee) is the unique identifier for all Te Aratini talks, panels and performances. In te reo Māori (the Māori language), Ara Tī refers to the penetration of new horizons which is the purpose of all Te Aratini dialogue.
