Gary B. Laine DDS discusses the happenings of Oahu on the morning of December 7, 1941. Much has been written and recorded about the damage created by the planes of the Kido Butai on December 7, 1941. More emphasis has been placed on Battleship Row and its catastrophe. However, the airfields were in a precarious state, not in an emergency mode. Consequently, the aircraft of the AAC were quite vulnerable and easy targets due to their alignment. This discussion will explore four of the facilities and the consequences of enemy aggression: Ford Island, Kaneohe Naval Air Station, Wheeler and Hickam Fields.
Gary B. Laine DDS was raised in Arcadia, CA and attended the University of Southern California for his undergraduate studies and his dental degree. Following that, he enlisted in the US Navy Dental Corps and served at Naval Station San Diego during the Viet Nam era, 1973-1975. Dr Laine returned for his specialty degree in prosthodontics at USC. Ultimately, he set up his private practice in 1978 in Palo Alto, CA which lasted nearly forty years.
Dr. Laine’s father was also a US Navy dentist at the end of World War 2 and the Korean War and his uncle served with the Mighty 8th Air Force(486th Bomb Group) during the Second World War. Dr Laine has served with the San Francisco Bay Area Honor Flight on their Board of Directors since 2019. He has had a lifelong interest in the history of World War 2 and currently, interviews those veterans around the United States who fought in this conflict, recording them on video. The purpose is to perpetuate their stories for future generations.
