AJ Styles faced John Cena at Summerslam 2016. At the end, Styles countered Cena’s AA, hit him with the Styles Clash and with the Phenomenal Forearm to pin him and win the match. Later that night, Dolph Ziggler challenged Dean Ambrose for the WWE title. At the end, Ambrose hit Dolph with the Dirty Deeds to retain the title. On Smackdown, Styles bragged about beating Cena, made fun of Dolph for losing and Dolph attacked him. Later that night, Styles bragged again. Dolph came out and they stopped him. Daniel Bryan came out, declared Styles the number one contender for the WWE Title and made him face Dolph, if Dolph wins, it’s going to be a triple threat match. They met that evening. At the end, Styles hit Dolph with the Styles Clash to win the match, then Styles confronted Ambrose. Next week, Baron Corbin faced Ambrose with Styles watching. Styles kicked Corbin and it ended in a DQ. Dean jumped outside on him, Corbin threw him inside, Ambrose hit him with the Dirty Deeds, caught Styles on the ropes and made fun of him. A week later, Styles hit Ambrose with a low blow. They met at Backlash. At the end, the ref got knocked down, Styles hit Ambrose with a low blow, hit him with the Styles Clash and pinned him to win the title.
