China develops portable neutron “weapon” powered by lithium and hydrogen.
Chinese scientists have developed a portable neutron source that performs controlled nuclear fusion between hydrogen and lithium. The device, which operates with just 10 watts of energy, can produce 10 billion fast neutrons per second. The system, which is the size of a fire extinguisher, paves the way for miniaturization in nuclear fusion technologies.
The project was carried out by the Xi’an Modern Control Technology Research Institute, one of the defense industry centers in northwestern China, and was published in the peer-reviewed journal High Power Laser and Particle Beams on June 11. The work is being carried out by North Development Investment, a subsidiary of China’s largest defense contractor Norinco.
“Atomic flashlight”
This neutron source sends out an intense and directed beam of neutron particles with no electrical charge. Each neutron carries an energy of 3 million electron volts, which is comparable to the energy of neutron particles emitted in an atomic bomb.
Neutrons are used to detect hidden explosives, nuclear materials and microscopic structural defects by passing through structures. The device has the potential to be used in scientific and industrial areas such as destroying cancerous tumors and examining virus structures.
The system works by generating electricity as a result of mechanical impact with piezoelectric ceramics. The energy produced creates a rotating electromagnetic cage in a small reactor the size of a teacup. Protons are accelerated here and hit the lithium cathode, and nuclear reactions occur. The most critical innovation is the technique called “polarized resonance”. This method increases the probability of fusion by a million times compared to traditional methods.
The researchers also emphasize that the device passed the stability test by working continuously for half an hour in a laboratory environment. While it is emphasized that the system does not require an external power source, can be controlled electronically and works in a repeatable manner, its low cost is also emphasized.
The researchers state that the device is not used directly as a weapon and that they avoid military terminology. However, it is evaluated that such systems can be used in applications such as directed neutron weapons in the future thanks to their portability and energy efficiency. Developed during the Cold War, “clean” neutron bombs were designed to kill people and leave infrastructure intact. Although they operate on similar physical principles to neutron bombs, the device has not yet been identified or used for military purposes.
