This weekend, I headed up to Orlando, Florida for a free Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) event called Gathering of the Tribes 2025 — a yearly tradition that’s been running for more than 16 years and continues to bring together martial artists, families, and instructors from all over.

The event was hosted by Cypress River Outdoor Education, a nonprofit organization led by Kayan Cajudo, who founded it to build community through outdoor learning, movement, and shared experiences. You can learn more about his work at cypressriver.org.

Among the arts represented was SD Kali, also known as Sanduguan Kali — the system practiced and taught by the event’s founder. It’s a Filipino martial art focused on practical weapon-based training, from stick and blade to empty-hand applications. SD Kali reflects what this event is all about: skilled practice, mutual respect, and the shared energy that keeps the Filipino martial arts community growing.

Throughout the day, instructors showcased different aspects of Filipino martial arts — from traditional drills to modern interpretations — while families gathered under the trees, sharing food at a community-style potluck. The sound of sticks clashing mixed with laughter, conversations, and the energy of everyone training together.

Events like this remind us that Filipino martial arts isn’t just about combat — it’s about connection, culture, and continuity.
They preserve heritage, strengthen bonds, and inspire the next generation to train with both heart and purpose.
