Cargo ship gets stuck at Seaview Beach, Karachi

The Abdul Sattar Edhi Avenue has barriers on either side to prevent people from heading to the Sea View beach as there is a Section 144 imposed to keep people out of the water due to the rough sea thanks to the approaching monsoon season. But that couldn't stop the floating vessel from arriving at the beach!


Like a beached whale, there is the cargo ship Hen Tong stuck on the Sea View beach. You go to the Mc Donald's parking lot and there it is right in front of you. This new landmark appeared early on Wednesday, which was also the first day of Eidul Fitr. According to the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), M.V. Heng Tong, a cargo ship coming from Shanghai enroute to Istanbul, Turkey, did not really enter the Karachi Harbour, although it was anchored in Pakistan waters awaiting crew change.


The rough sea caused the vessel to lose its anchors as it started drifting towards shallow waters. KPT was informed about the situation rather late as by that time the ship was already in shallow waters. That's when KPT alerted the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) but they could also not be of much help.


According to KPT, the harbour's navigation channel has not been impacted by the ship's floating off to shore. It was also explained that "salvaging the vessel is the responsibility of the ship's owners" although KPT and PSMA will remain available for any operational and tactical assistance in Pakistan waters. The ship is owned by a Hong Kong-based cargo company.


Normally, upon entering Pakistan waters, all ships raise the Pakistan flag on deck as it is in Pakistan territory. But M.V. Heng Tong is flying a Panama flag. It never thought of making the change in the emergency that it found itself in. The ship with a capacity of 3,600 dead weight tonnage is 98 meters in length and 20 metres wide was built in 2010.


Seeing the news about the ship's running ground on television, several people headed to the beach. Some wondered about the containers loaded on the ship and if the cargo would get spoiled. Some wondered if the strong tides would break the ship. One beach goer, on hearing how the ship ended up at the beach, laughed and said: "I've been hearing about the sacrificial goats and buffaloes breaking ropes and escaping and now we have a whole ship losing its anchors to end up in troubled waters."
