Four Latin American countries have joined together to try and boost the price their producers get for coffee.

The price has plummeted on the world market to just 130 U-S dollars a ton threatening the fabric of these countries' economies.

Coffee producers in Latin America have joined forces to boost the price of their coffee on the world market.

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Colombia have stopped their coffee exports indefinitely in an attempt to recoup the price-fall.

The decision was made after coffee prices plummeted in less than a month from 175 U-S dollars to 130 U-S dollars a ton, which threatens these countries frail economies.

"At this moment four Central American countries and Colombia made a decision yesterday to 'close the records' temporarily, due mainly to low prices."

The four countries announced they will continue with their strategy until prices reach a minimum of 170 U-S dollars per ton.

Coffee prices fell despite the countries' earlier efforts this year to raise prices by withholding 20 per cent of total production in each country.

The measure was adopted by all Central American countries- except Guatemala- and it was supported by Brazil, Indonesia and most African countries.

Other countries such as Brazil- the world's largest coffee producer- could also join the group of four.

Coffee is one of Central America's most important export products.

Costa Rica and Colombia are among the world's main coffee exporters and in 1994 coffee was Hondura's main export product. Coffee has also been one of El Salvador's most important crops.

Coffee-producing nations will meet later this week in Brazil to analyze the situation and adopt new measures to successfully boost world prices.
