Описание к видео ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Samedan - St. Moritz - Chur, Glacier express cab ride in a Ge 4/4 I from 1953 [09.2020]

This will be our first trip in a Ge 4/4 I - a Rhaetian railway locomotive built between 1947 - 1953. It's a treat for the ears hearing the antique mechanics diligently doing their work. During acceleration you'll hear the step switch: a selector that cycles between 28 different voltages which feed the 4 traction motors. When we change directions during shunting, or come to a stop, you may also hear the air powered reversing switch or separators.

We start with a tour of a sister locomotive at the depot in Samedan. Of the 10 of these engines that were built, 4 remain in existence. The one we look at was actually taken out of service in 2012 and lent to the Swiss museum of transport for a period of 5 years, however due to locomotive shortages, it reentered service in 2016. With the current delivery of the new capricorn trainsets from Stadler, locomotives are being freed up from passenger services, which has already led to a renewed decommissioning of locomotives, such as the Ge 6/6 IIs. It's just a matter of time before these are gone too, apart from any locomotives that will be kept historically.

The line we're on is nothing new to this channel, the meter gauge Albula line of the RhB, which is world heritage listed along with the Bernina railway. This is however the first time we're doing the trip from St Moritz (past videos commenced in Samedan). We are however picking up the locomotive from Samedan, taking it solo to St Moritz, where it is coupled with our train, the Glacier express, which will continue from our final station in Chur, all the way to Brig and Zermatt.

In Chur, we park the locomotive in the Depot and call it a day.
