There are a few different types of DJI drones that I will quickly go over. Consumer drones, These are typically used for recreational flying and aerial photography, with popular examples including the DJI Mini and Mavic series. Enterprise drones, are designed for commercial and industrial use, these types of drones often feature specialized equipment like mechanical shutters, advanced zoom cameras, and the ability to perform tasks like surveying and search and rescue. First-Person View drones, These drones are built for an immersive flying experience, often used in drone racing and for providing high-speed, low-latency video feeds.
But the real question is, Why are they trying to ban DJI drones? DJI drones are not currently banned in the United States, but there could be a potential ban on new sales looms if a required national security audit is not completed by a December 23, 2025 deadline. so what If the audit doesn't happen, DJI and other drone manufacturers would be automatically added to what they call a regulatory list, which would likely prevent new products from being sold or used over in the United States. DJI Drones that are already owned by consumers would likely remain legal to use, though ongoing support and future product availability are uncertain.
Automatic default ban, If the risk assessment is also not completed by the deadline, DJI and other drone companies would automatically be added to the Federal Communications Commission's "Covered List". Being added to this list would also prevent new DJI products from receiving FCC approval, effectively banning their sale and use in the United States as well. Some good news can be added to this that due to the Lack of progress, No agency has yet stepped forward to conduct the mandated audit, and DJI has stated that the review process has not begun. There is also yet another list, Commerce Department's "entity list," which restricts its access to United States technology, and also still placing it on the FCC's "Covered List" which prohibits DJI equipment from being used on US communications infrastructure. Again while no public proof has been presented, the US government is concerned that footage and data could be used elsewhere.
In response to the potential ban, new drone brands with designs similar to DJI's models have emerged online for sale. I will have some links below in my description to check out what is still up for sale, but keep in mind a due date is in the near future and we are talking about conducting a security audit by December 23, 2025. So if you already own a DJI drone, it remains legal to use, though some of the downside may be future firmware updates could be affected, No new releases, No next-gen upgrades.
