It’s said that shooting a car's gas tank will cause a massive explosion.
To see if this happens in real life,
MythBusters borrowed a car from a fan to test the experiment.
They began by shooting directly at the gas tank, but it didnt explode.

To up the challenge, they used incendiary bullets supplied by the local police.
These bullets have phosphorus in their tips, which can ignite when exposed to air.
After carefully positioning the gas tank, they fired at it.
Even though the bullets hit the mark, there was still no explosion.

Thinking the bullets needed more distance to create friction,
they doubled the shooting range and tried again.
On the fifth shot, the gas tank finally caught fire.
However, since earlier shots had already punctured the tank
and let the fuel mix with air, there was still no explosion.

This test showed that the dramatic gas tank explosions we see in movies are just that—movie magic.
