Until a month or so ago, the BJP looked comfortable in its quest to return to power in Manipur. The CM had seemingly strong support among party leaders and cadre, the Congress had been weakened given how the BJP had systematically weakened the party in the past five years, and the allies were all quiet.

Then came the day the BJP announced its candidate list. The state witnessed a riot-like situation, with leaders and workers hitting the streets and vandalising public and private property. Soon, one of the party stalwarts, Ch Bijoy Singh, was expelled, and his interviews against the party leadership went viral.
