Every year, millions of Buddhists come together for a sacred occasion: Kathina Civara Dana. But what is the meaning of this ancient tradition, and why has it been celebrated for over two millennia?
The Kathina festival traces its roots back to the time of the Buddha, over 2,500 years ago. During the monsoon season, Buddhist monks would stay in one place, refraining from travel to avoid harming crops and small creatures. This period of retreat, known as ‘Vassa,’ is a time of intense meditation, study, and reflection.”
Vassa was established to allow monks to deepen their spiritual practice and prevent the harm caused by travel during the rainy season.
The origins of the Kathina tradition are closely linked to Visakha, one of the Buddha’s most devoted followers. According to Buddhist texts, after a group of monks completed their Vassa retreat, their robes were worn and tattered. Witnessing their need, Visakha approached the Buddha to offer new robes.
Visakha’s generosity set the foundation for the Kathina ceremony, which has since become a symbolic way for laypeople to support the monastic community.
The Kathina ceremony is more than just a robe-offering—it’s an expression of gratitude and unity. During this time, laypeople gather to offer Kathina robes and other essentials to the monks, supporting their dedication to a life of spiritual practice.
The word ‘Kathina’ refers to a wooden frame traditionally used by monks to sew their robes, and the robe offering itself holds special significance. According to tradition, the Kathina robe must be woven and sewn within 24 hours, a task that symbolizes dedication and devotion
The Kathina Civara Dana festival reminds us that generosity and unity are timeless virtues. Through this tradition, the teachings of the Buddha continue to inspire millions worldwide, reminding us that every act of giving brings us closer to peace and compassion.
