Motive: Matt Engarde hired the assassin Shelly de Killer to kill Juan Corrida to prevent him from revealing a forged suicide note that would ruin Engarde's public image. Corrida had planned to impersonate Engarde in a costume at an awards ceremony to expose the truth about the note, which was related to the suicide of Corrida's former fiancée, Celeste Inpax. But Juan was still alive after Shelly De Killer left, so Matt took matters into his own hands and strangled Juan to death and stabbed him with a steak knife to throw off the police.

Sentence: Life in Prison

Additional Investigation: We are about to arrest Matt Engarde in court but he pulls out a walkie talkie and says that Shelly De Killer still has Maya Fey hostage and if he goes to jail, he will have Maya killed. But when it seems like all hope was lost, the prosecutor of Justice Street, Franziska Von Karma, whips the walkie talkie out of Matt’s hand and shows the tape we found at Matt’s home. Matt suddenly was terrified and didn’t want the tape shown but Shelly caught wind of it and realized that Matt was hiding this from him and demanded the judge to play it. They play it and it shows Shelly attempting to kill Juan Corrida but didn’t realize he was still alive and Matt was gonna blackmail Shelly de Killer with it. This angers Shelly and breaks off the contract with Matt saying that he will return Maya unharmed and Matt will pay the price. Matt freaks out and confesses to the judge. He gets taken away by the police and not long after, we see Maya alive and well. Phoenix and Pearl run to Maya and group hug, relieved that she is OK. We then get promoted to the next district: Trial Road! On another note, Miles Edgeworth finds out that Franziska Von Karma was flying back to Germany to learn more about being a prosecutor but swears that she will someday best Miles Edgeworth at being a prosecutor. They both part ways but swear that they will meet again. We now move on to Trial Road and first visit Ivy University since that was where Mia and Phoenix first met and is what we will learn about next case.
