ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) is a pan-European network of excellence linking leading AI and machine-learning scientists across 43 local units and 16 cross-border research programmes. Designed as a distributed laboratory, it promotes open science, shared infrastructure and coordinated talent pipelines so Europe can act coherently on the global AI stage. https://ellis.eu

Membership already exceeds 1 700 accredited researchers who satisfy stringent publication benchmarks and demonstrate substantial expertise in machine learning. Applicants join individually, while doctoral candidates enter through a competitive annual call that pairs each PhD student with advisors in two different countries, ensuring mobility and interdisciplinary supervision. The local units provide city-scale hubs, and the thematic programmes span computer vision, natural-language processing, robotics, optimisation and theory, together strengthening fundamental research.

ELLIS is also a trusted partner for EU-funded initiatives that build on its network: ELIAS targets sustainability, ELSA focuses on safe and secure AI, and the new €25 million Horizon-Europe project ELLIOT will create open multimodal foundation models capable of robust generalisation on streaming data. These collaborations took centre stage at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva in July 2025, where the organisation engaged policymakers, industry and academics to expand joint research and recruitment, reinforcing continent-wide collaboration.

By federating excellence rather than centralising it, ELLIS aims to retain European talent, attract international specialists and foster reproducible, open-source advances aligned with regional values on privacy and societal benefit.
