High school girls enjoyed an opportunity to learn about careers in construction through Camp NAWIC, a hands-on free summer day camp hosted by the San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction. Camp NAWIC celebrated its 10th year of camp June 19 - 23 at the Kearny High School of Engineering, Innovation, and Design in San Diego.

Camp NAWIC was created as a community outreach project to kindle interest among high school age girls in pursuing careers in the construction industry, where women are still vastly under represented. Camp activities and projects are designed to challenge the students to discover the many opportunities available. Girls learn teamwork and trade skills. Instructors and camp mentors are all construction professionals.

First-time attendees or "apprentices" learned the basic skills of masonry, electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, solar energy, and surveying. Returning campers or "journeywomen" refreshed their skills and then participated in a hands-on building project. This year, journeywomen constructed a storage shed which was donated to a preschool/kindergarten program.

Camp NAWIC received funding from the Future Construction Leaders Foundation of San Diego, the recently formed 501c3 non-profit supporting programs fostering interest in construction industry careers among youth.
