The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations with the Government of Kenya has secured financial resources under the Global Environment Facility (GEF 6) to implement the “Restoration of arid and Semi-Arid lands (ASAL) of Kenya through bio-enterprise development” project. This is one of 11 child projects under The Restoration Initiative (TRI), an initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to address the challenges of environmental deforestation and degradation. The project being implemented in Mount Kulal Biosphere Reserve in Marsabit County, a UNESCO Man-andthe-Biosphere reserve due to its unique and varied ecosystems, as well as in the wider Mukugodo forest landscape in Isiolo and Laikipia Counties, which have high biodiversity, wildlife of touristic interest. Being in ASALs, these two landscapes are amongst the most vulnerable to climate change. The Kenya TRI project adopts an integrated approach to address deforestation, land degradation and biodiversity loss, targeting policy and institutional capacity while supporting communityled forest and landscape restoration (FLR) and the development of alternative livelihoods. The project intends to document all the achievements through videography which is to be done by a professional contractor through PMU support. To enhance sustainability and as an exit strategy; the project intended to support the mobility of the grassroot partners to monitor and continue with the FLR works in the projects. This will be done by procuring and delivery of motorbikes to Narupa Conservancy (1), Ilmamusi CFA (1), Leparua Conservancy (1) and Mt.Kulal CFA(2). The project also intends to enhance the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Mt.Kulal CFA by supporting the community to continue with the FLR works in the ecosystem. One way to achieve this is through provision of water to the community from the forest to be accessible outside the forest. The projects intend to rehabilitate existing water infrastructure so that there will be little disturbance of the forest from livestock and humans as they access water.
