Situated between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury is the “New Town” of Telford. A new town designated in the 1960’s, it is currently served by Telford Central railway station. The station first broke the 1 million passenger barrier in 2012, with in excess of 1.2 million travelling through Telford Central today.
It’s location just 12.5 miles North of the Birmingham environs (Wolverhampton) and a stones-throw from the M54 motorway make Telford Central an ideal location for commuters, with a park-and-ride facility erected next to the station in 1986 to support vast numbers of commuters wishing to use the station and it’s proximity to a large industrial centre.

The £700,000 investment required to develop the station and surrounds site was borne by three organisations, namely, Shropshire County Council, British Rail and The Telford Development Corporation. All of whom would gain kudos from its improvements.
The addition of full-length platforms meant it could now receive intercity traffic as well as local.
Telford has, as it’s southwestern boundary the Severn Gorge – now known as Ironbridge Gorge, in recognition of the world famous and historic Iron Bridge constructed in 1781 by Abraham Darby III. The first of its kind to be built solely of cast iron. Now a world Heritage site and an engineering wonder of the world at that time.
If you were wondering how Telford got its name, then wonder no more. It is actually named after the “Colossus of Roads” - no not that one. It is a play on words to honour one of the greatest road and canal – and dare I say – Bridge builders of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One Thomas Telford.
Mr Telford was accredited for many civil engineering project, including the Menai |Strait bridge, a significant number of major road and canal projects and for improving the work of McAdam who invented the road surface tarmacadam.
Telford Central was on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line operated by West Midland trains. Sadly, the station has waxed and waned as far as services were concerned – with some services being withdrawn
In spite of the full-length platforms built to accommodate inter-city trains to and from London Euston, these services were withdrawn by British Rail in the early 1990’s, followed by a cessation of the trial service from Shrewsbury to London in 2000. There was also a service to London Marylebone which only lasted 3 years and was also withdrawn at the beginning of 2011.
On a positive note, Virgin Trains introduced r daily serviced to and from London Euston.
