Fifty years ago, in 1971, Thomas Tryon's book "The Other" was published. He then teamed up with director Robert Mulligan to immediately adapt it into a feature film, shot in 1971 and released in theaters in 1972.

For this in-depth video essay about the making of "The Other", I spoke to all of the film's principal surviving cast/crew members. I conducted Zoom conference calls with actor Marty Udvarnoky ("Holland Perry") and actress Jenny Sullivan ("Torrie"), and I took notes from my separate conversations with actress Diana Muldaur ("Alexandra"); actor Clarence Crow ("Russell Perry"); editor O. Nicholas Brown; Academy-Award-nominated production designer Albert Brenner; assistant director/associate producer Don Kranze; and many more.

The surviving cast/crew also told me about their memories of cast/crew members who are no longer alive, such as Chris Udvarnoky ("Niles Perry"), Uta Hagen ("Ada"), John Ritter ("Rider"), Victor French ("Leno Angelini"), Lou Frizzell ("Uncle George"), Norma Connolly ("Aunt Vee"), Portia Nelson ("Old Lady Rowe"), cinematographer Robert Surtees and editor Folmar Blangsted.

Plus, I reveal how "The Other" influenced my own career as a writer/director.

Furthermore, I chronicle the careers of Tom Tryon and Robert Mulligan, both of whom were known to be nice and consummate professionals on a film set... but in private, both men lived lives of complicated personality -- and that is what "The Other" is all about.
