One of three new storms in the Western Pacific, Tropical Storm Ragasa (Philippine name Nando) poses a major threat to the northern Philippines, southern Taiwan, and southern China in the next 7 days. The storm is expected to rapidly intensify in the Philippine Sea this weekend, and by early next week will likely be passing through the Batanes islands. With some forecasters expecting a Category 4 peak, Ragasa is likely to become a dangerous typhoon.

The longer term threat extends to China and Hong Kong, with typhoon conditions possible on Tuesday or Wednesday in the region as the storm arrives and weakens as it moves inland, or strays along the coast towards the Leizhou Peninsula.

Rainfall projections are also high, with over 500mm possible for several areas near the track of the storm, the eastern mountains of Taiwan, and enhanced rainfall for the Manila region which could also reach this total.
