The area has endured decades of water shortage and the highest water costs in the country under investor-owned California American Water. Melodie’s writing and communication skills have been vital in educating the community on critical water issues. She is also an award-winning songwriter and an experienced gardener. Melodie and her husband Phil Wellman are partners in Wellman Advertising and Design. Their ad agency was responsible for winning Measure J, defeating California American Water’s $3 million local media campaign against it. Measure J directs the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District to buyout Cal Am through eminent domain if necessary
