Rounding
When asked to round, the tenths place is two places to the right of the decimal, the hundreths place is three places to the right of the decimal, the thousandths place is four places to the right, and so on. If the number is five or greater we round up. If four or less, we round down. Let’s look at an example.


Round 7.6358 to the nearest hundredth.
When we look at this, we need to know that the answer is going to be either 7.63 or 7.64. When we look at the thousandths place (three spots to the right of the decimal), we see the number 5. This means round up. Therefore, the correct answer is 7.64. If the number had been 7.6348, and the number in the thousandths place was a 4 rather than a 5, then we would not have rounded up and the answer would be 7.63.


Columns
There will also be questions about columns place. Moving right to left, we have ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Take a look at the question below.

Given the number 6,345, what column is the 3 in? We move right to left, so the five is in the ones column, the four is in the tens column, the three is in the hundreds column, and six is in the thousands column.
