"Tree of Heaven"; Is there any better way to acknowledge the tropical icon amongst trees? The tall, slender and graceful palm, also known as the “Tree of Life”, shows off its huge traditional influence ranging all the way from food to construction materials. Coconut Tree, scientifically referred to as Cocos Nucifera, is the only species of the genus Cocos, which is found in 89 tropical countries including the nation of India. Widely documented by tourists and a source of inspiration to many, Coconut is still an open & mysterious study material for researchers. As for the farmers who are responsible for their life and preservation, it is very important to have knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the mighty palm. Starting from the base of the trunk which measures 0.8 meters in diameter, all the way to the top filled with 30 to 32 lush green leaves which span more than twice the size of an average human, ranging up to 12.5 feet. The coconut Tree's flowers are bi-sexual and bloom each and every month or moon cycle. The male petals which mature from 18 to 15 days, open first attracting bees with their sweet nectar, whereas the female flowers mature from 21 to 24 days. Coconut palms are believed to be largely cross-pollinated by means of wind and insects, among them bees are considered important. Kernel of the coconut, edible in both tender and dried forms, weighs up to 330 grams, as the nutritious flesh copra ranges to 170 grams, which is used to extract both milk and oil. Unlike others, the tree has neither a tap root nor root hairs but has a fibrous system that can range anywhere from 1500 to 8000, a few of those penetrate deep into the soil for better means of stability in its environment.
