Although the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide, or CO2, is minuscule, totaling approximately 0.04 percent of the atmosphere, we continually hear that human-made CO2 will continue to grow exponentially and cause the Earth to warm dangerously. This, however, is based on a mistaken understanding of how the greenhouse effect works. The absorption of heat by CO2 will not increase exponentially, but instead taper off slowly as the concentration of this benign gas continues to rise.
It is similar to painting a window black. When you apply the first coat, it will significantly reduce the amount of sunlight coming through. Subsequent coats of paint will further reduce the light entering the room, but they will block less and less light with each new coat of paint. It becomes saturated, and eventually, adding a new coat of paint will do essentially nothing to block out the light.
Likewise, after a certain level of CO2 is reached in the atmosphere, adding more will do very little to warm the planet. Even doubling our emissions will not cause much of a change. For instance, in the pre-industrial era about 100 years ago, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere was about 280 parts per million. Today, it is 415 parts per million. This is an increase of 45%, but due to the saturation of the greenhouse effect, the increase in greenhouse warming was only about 6%.
Thus, we should not worry about warming of the atmosphere due to our emissions of CO2. Noticeable warming will not continue forever due to the saturation of carbon dioxide.
