This is the first record ever of the original songs from the medieval Codex Buranus, it was made in 1964 by Thomas Binkley and his Studio der Frühen Musik.
The goliards were extremely unconventional figures, much more than the numerous other artists, like the jongleurs or the troubadours, of the 11th-12th and 13th centuries. Their poetry was too learned for the common people and the nobility and too provocative for the church. They were out of step with their times, they strongly despised the secular culture venerating the classical poets who wrote in Latin. It can therefore be conjectured that, as they drew inspiration from classical poetry, their musical taste was also influenced by what remained in the historical memory of ancient modes and scales. I think the arrangements and aesthetic choices of Binkley and his ensemble have come closer than any other. Personally, I really enjoyed the way that the songs were interpreted; I love the minimalist arrangements that scrupulously stick to the original melodies and I think that, thanks to these choices, the songs are much more pleasant and believable than many others (maybe too much?) orchestrated interpretations of this ancient repertory.
Thomas Binkley (1931 - 1995) was an American lutenist and early music scholar. He studied at the University of Illinois and the University of Munich. He taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. He was then founding director of the Indiana University Early Music Institute at Bloomington, Indiana from 1979 till his death from cancer at the age of 63. For twenty years he led the Studio der Frühen Musik in Munich with Andrea von Ramm and Sterling Jones, producing an extensive discography of medieval music.
