Kodak Ektar 100 in Venice Beach | 1983 Canon AF35M II

This is my first time shooting Ektar 100 and my first time shooting with the Canon (New) Sure Shot aka AF35M II.

I bought the camera at an antique mall in the early days of my camera collecting obsession. I didn't even think to check the battery compartment before purchase to make sure there wasn't any deadly corrosion. After paying $20 I got the camera home and opened the battery compartment to find two old AA batteries had basically melted inside.

Not to be discouraged, I took the camera to an Omaha repair shop and the owners said he could take the best of this camera and combine it with the best of some other non-working AF35M II cameras he had to make one that worked.

And that's exactly what he did. The camera feels brand new, and it works perfect.

As far as the photos go, there were only a few that I felt were underexposed. Not sure what caused that but something in the camera didn't meter correctly, and I had to push the scans of the film pretty hard to get something useable.

The other issues I had was pressing the shutter too hard (especially on vertical shots) and causing the camera to go out of level. I knew it each time it happened, but there was nothing I could do. And I'm not a fan of cropping my 35mm shots. Digital? No worries. Not sure why - just how I feel.

I saved my Ektar 100 purposely for Venice Beach knowing I wanted to shoot as much vibrant color as possible, and there was certainly no shortage of that at the beach. Teal, turquoise, red, blue, purple - and let me tell you, Ektar 100 made them really pop. The stock really pushes toward blue and magenta, and I tried not to adjust that too much in my editing. I did warm them up a touch and even slid the tint toward green on some, but overall I like the cooler, magenta tones of this film stock.

I'm excited to shoot more of it - especially because it's much less expensive than Portra 400 & 800.
