The fort is also said to have got its name from the fact that the convicts in the landing pit, the leather urichan ridge, the hanging cave and the urtivittan rock were built by chains.
History: -
This historic fort was built by the Vijayanagara kings in the 15th century. Sankagiri Hill Fort is the tallest hill fort in Tamil Nadu. The fort has nine gates from the base of the hill to the top.
The rocks on the mountain are beautifully carved and used. The bricks used to build the fort are also very sturdy. கி. B. The fort is believed to have been fortified by Tipu Sultan in the seventeenth century. The 9th gate mentions the year 1799. So it may have been built at this gate by the English.
Varadharasap Perumal Temple is located at the 3rd gate of the fort. Worship is still held here today. The pillars in the wedding hall of the temple are very carved. Part of the temple has been reconstructed by the Archaeological Survey of India. Next to the 5th gate, the soldiers' shelter is in a dilapidated condition. Between gates 5 and 6 is a shrine to the Muslims and a mysterious tunnel next to it. There is an ammunition depot near the 6th gate.
At the top of the fort is the Chenna Kesavap Perumal Temple. Apart from the main festival days, the temple is placed at the foot of the hill. There is also a Someswaraswamy temple at the foot of the hill. The fort is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India

1. Deeran Chinnamalai was hanged in this fort by the British on July 31, 1805 (August 18). Shiva temple in the lower fort
