Old-Time TOTW

Old-Time TOTW #204 is Sailing Over England from the playing of Fitzhugh Lee Triplett (6 July 1897--24 January 1981) of Clay, Clay County, WV. He was the son of William Hedgeman Triplett (1845-1906) and Elizabeth "Bettie" Louisa Mullins (1859-1932). He married Lula Jane Rose (1897-1952) on 28 April 1917.

I was not able to find much about Lee Triplett. He came from a large family and had at least eight siblings and eleven children of his own. He and his family were farmers, and he is listed in the 1940 Census as being a laborer with the WPA.

Sailing Over England is a very melodic tune which Traditional Tune Archive mentions may have been derived from a ballad air. The Digital Library of Appalachia notes that Lee Triplett was a "mainstay at the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville, WV, where he kept up a friendly rivaly with fiddler French Carpenter."

The recording of Lee Triplett playing the tune at the end of this video is from Larry Warren's Slippery-Hill. Be sure to check his site out: https://www.slippery-hill.com/content...

Larry does fine work by making many source recordings available all in one place. There isn't another site like Slippery-Hill.

Joining me in our recording is Stephen Rapp on banjo (Kent, OH), and Jeanie Thieken on guitar (Hocking Hills, OH).

Jeanie, along with Nick Weiland and Mark Barsamian, play in the band Jeanie and the Dreamers.
