London Mayor Sadiq Khan faced criticism after releasing statistics that suggested a decline in certain crimes in the city. He shared a chart on social media indicating that knife crime, residential burglary, theft from individuals, and personal robbery had decreased by 19%, 10%, and 13%, respectively, in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year.
“The latest figures indicate that robbery, theft, residential burglary, and knife crime are down in London, but there’s still much work to be done before I’m satisfied,” he stated in his post on X. “With record funding from City Hall, the Metropolitan Police is prioritizing visible policing in its crime-fighting efforts.” However, many reacted negatively when it was revealed that the Mayor had omitted some alarming statistics showing increases in other crimes. Data from a London Assembly committee meeting last month, shared by Rory Geoghegan, founder of The Public Safety Foundation, indicated that gun crime, rape, and shoplifting had risen by 18%, 9%, and 38%, respectively, in the year leading up to June 2025 compared to the previous year. Theft from individuals, which Khan had previously noted as decreasing, was reported to have increased by 12%.
“For completeness, here are some crime figures that the @MayorofLondon chose not to disclose - buried in a 100-page PDF,” Geoghegan remarked while sharing the new statistics.
In response, one individual accused the Mayor of “gaslighting and spreading propaganda,” calling it “sickening.” Another user labeled the Mayor as “utterly dishonest.” A third commenter suggested that while it’s commendable to highlight decreasing crime rates from a lower baseline, it might be wise to downplay such successes if they stem from a higher baseline, especially since any reductions in crime cannot be attributed solely to him.
Concerns about a crime wave in London have been escalating. Recently, purple lines with the message “Mind the Grab” were painted on Oxford Street to address the significant issue of phone theft in the city. This campaign, supported by the Metropolitan Police, is being conducted by Currys and the University of London’s Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research to raise awareness and reduce the number of mobile phone thefts on the high street. Research commissioned by Currys revealed that theft hotspots in Westminster experienced a mobile phone being stolen every 15 minutes last year.
