A periscope is a cool tool that is made out of a tube that is attached to a set of mirrors. The light reflects from the mirrors so that you can see things that are otherwise out of sight. For example, a periscope can allow a submarine to see a ship while it is still under the water. In times of war, this would allow it to shoot a torpedo at the ship before the ship knew the submarine was close by. Periscopes can also be used to see an object behind a tall obstacle like a wall.
