Notebook of a Long Day’s Journey into a Hillbrow Night by Césaire Youth (Johannesburg, South Africa) asks: What would Aimé Césaire's classic anticolonial long poem sound like if it were written today, by teenagers living in Hillbrow? Working from the understanding that translation is at once a form of close reading, and a creative act, Césaire Youth from the Windybrow Arts Centre have created a new other-tongue and mother-tongue translation, that reimagines and transposes Césaire’s poem to Hillbrow today. At once a homage and a heresy, an excavation of a shared history and a vibrant new work in its own right, it asks what comes after the end of the world?
