Life After Lumbar Fixation and Fusion (Level I & II, TLIF)

Описание к видео Life After Lumbar Fixation and Fusion (Level I & II, TLIF)

Lumbar fixation and fusion is a surgical procedure to correct problems with the help of small bones in the spine. The total recovery time is up to 8 months, with the bone continuing to evolve for 12 to 18 months.

A hospital stay of between 2 and 4 days is required. Medical staff encourages patients to get up and walk around as quickly as possible after the surgery.

Recovery tips:

Get help with basic necessities from friends, family, or a neighbor for the first few days.

Avoid activities such as lifting, bending, twisting, cooking, cleaning or driving. Use "Grabber” devices to pick things up off the ground or shelves.

The spine should be kept straight even when getting into and out of bed, follow the log-roll technique. Ensure the bed is not too high or too low for the log-rolling technique.

Showers are not allowed the first few days after spinal fusion surgery. A sponge bath may be permitted so long as the incision site does not get wet.

Patients may need to wear a back brace for three months to limit motion in the spine. You are allowed to wear a fitting t-shirt or tank top under the brace that prevents skin irritation such as rashes or blisters.

Walking around as much as is comfortable. Vigorous exercise is not advised.

Keep your spine in a neutral position and maintain a good posture throughout the day.

Sleep on your back with your knees bent and a pillow under your knees. You can also sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between your legs.

By the 6th week after surgery, patients can return to school or work that does not involve physical labor. It may take 6 months for the individual to return to work if a job is strenuous.

Patients can start walking longer distances and do light chores around the home after 5 weeks.

Driving is allowed after 5 weeks or after clearance by your surgeon. If it is an hour’s drive, it is advisable to stop and get out to walk for a brief time.

After 6 weeks to 3 months post-surgery, an outpatient physical therapy program may be started.

Physical therapy helps patients stay aware of safe ways to sit, stand, lift, pull, or push objects to prevent back pain from recurring.

Once the fusion is completely solidified into bone, doctors may permit a full return to an active lifestyle, including bending, lifting, and twisting. This approval occurs about 6 months and sometimes it may take up to 12 months.

Don't sit for too long, take frequent breaks by standing up and stretching every 30 to 45 minutes.
