As 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of the war in Iraq, AEI’s Danielle Pletka and Gary Schmitt hosted a series of panels with decision-makers and experts, seeking to provide a fact-based analysis of the conflict—its run-up, conduct, and aftermath. Part 5 begins with the success of “the surge.” It then turns to newly elected President Barack Obama’s determination to move on from Iraq and reduce as quickly as possible the US military presence there. The video focuses on the consequences of that decision: a rise in sectarian violence, an increase in Iranian influence among the Shi’a of Iraq, and the opportunity for jihadist Sunnis under the banner of ISIS to overrun large parts of the country. The video concludes by noting that, when assessing the war, it is important to consider not only the many failures but also the successes: Post-Saddam Iraq is the most democratic state in the Arab world and no longer threatens its neighbors, allies, or the US.
