In 1846, Mormon prophet Brigham Young started the Law of Adoption, which was the doctrine stating that any Priesthood holder could seal himself to another Priesthood holder in a Celestial Father-Son relationship that would continue to exist in the Celestial Kingdom. Young sealed himself to deceased Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. After that, he sealed himself to John D. Lee and to 38 young men before taking the LDS Church to Utah. Wilford Woodruff stopped the practice of this doctrine in 1894 after having 45 persons adopted to him.
