My cat is mostly an indoor cat and I do what I can to always keep her safe. But I've been letting her out in the backyard from time to time. And for awhile, my backyard fence has been enough to keep her in. That is until she started getting curious about what's outside the yard. As you can imagine, she is able to climb my fence very easily. So after I found her over on the other side a few times, I had to do something.

In this video I'll show you two different solutions that have worked very well to stop my cat from jumping over the fence. The first method involves chicken wire that I stapled directly to the fence. I bought 2 foot wide chicken wire from Lowe's and stapled half to the fence and let the other half overhang at the top. This isn't the best looking but it's working great! The amount of netting sticking out from the top is enough to stop my cat from jumping over the fence.

I cut and attached these in about 8 foot sections. The reason is that the longer the sections, the more it sags because of the weight. One longer section in particular was sagging too much so I used a separate wire to hold it up. For now, this very effective on the side of my yard where the plants hide much of the somewhat ugly chicken wire.

But on the other side I needed something better looking since the fence is fully exposed. The 1 foot wide chicken wire I'm using on the exposed fence is coated with black PVC. I also had to cut 1 foot pieces of 2x4s as supports. And I used metal fence brackets as well. They attach to the fence and then the 2x4 pieces will attach onto these. Finally, holding it all together are short 1 1/4 inch wood screws.

I've looked at a lot of cat barrier solutions online and they're all very costly. One that I saw had extension posts at $16 each. And that's just for the extensions where the netting will attach! To me that way too expensive especially if there's a lot of fence to cover. Using 2x4s is much more economical and I find that it blends in nicely. For these wood extensions, I just cut and repeated on each fence post where I needed coverage. Once all the extensions are attached I stapled the PVC covered chicken wire to the underside of the 2x4s. I could've put the netting on the top but I wanted to make sure my neighbor wouldn't be able to see it from their side. And with this method, I was able to just unroll the chicken wire as I stapled and only made one cut at the end.

I'm really happy with the way this looks and it has completely stopped my cat from jumping over the fence. And equally nice is that this was relatively inexpensive. I've listed the materials here in the description so it's easy for you to find. So what I've shown in this video is 2 inexpensive options you can try to stop your cat from jumping over the fence. The second method definitely looks better but does take more work. And eventually, I may use the 2nd method all the way around my yard. But I've found that both methods I've shown here are equally effective at stopping my cat from jumping over the fence.

Here's the last thing I need to mention. I also put chicken wire behind my plants because there's definitely enough room back here for my cat to climb out. So definitely don't forget to cover areas like this. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button so you won't miss any of my DIY videos!
