Jauk—traditional masked dance arranged for gamelan gong kebyar. The jauk character is derived from a traditional play in which all the dancers wear masks depicting spirits of various types. In Jauk Manis, the dancer's agitated movements reveal both strong and refined aspects, which combine to depict a whimsical, ephemeral, and (at times) flippant character. The improvised movements are closely tracked by the drummer who accents the movements with percussive sounds, pauses, and signals tempo changes to the other musicians with split-second timing.
