Описание к видео From Tiny Use Cases to JVMG Labs: Infrastructure Development w/Japanese Visual Media Graph project

The Japanese Visual Media Graph (JVMG) project is building a knowledge graph with data compiled by online fan and enthusiast communities to enable large-scale quantitative research in the domains of Japanese anime, manga and video games.

In this presentation we outline our iterative approach to handling the challenges stemming from needing to combine heterogeneous data sources – anchored in different locations around the world – and making them available for research to a wider research community including scholars not trained in digital humanities or data science.

The infrastructure development process in the JVMG project is guided by the Tiny Use Case workflow methodology inspired by Agile software development practices (Freybe et al. 2019), emphasizing the need for domain experts’ work on smaller well-defined research problems to regularly provide feedback on the state and usability of the data in addition to specifying new requirements regarding both the data itself and the available tools to operate on them. The series of Tiny Use Cases conducted by our project team or in collaboration with external researchers, along with those undertaken by visiting researchers, have also contributed to building an increasing understanding of both the potentials and limitations of the graph, and the support needs of humanities researchers in engaging with large-scale quantitative research.

This ongoing learning process enabled by the various Tiny Use Cases and the collaborations they entail informs not only the way we are developing tutorial materials for the JVMG knowledge graph, but also defines our approach to designing JVMG Lab events. Centering on a hands-on approach the aim of these labs is to facilitate domain experts with the knowledge and skills needed to incorporate the data in their research. Our presentation will outline the ways in which the Tiny Use Case methodology can also be used in this training scenario.
