It was a mix of pageantry, and a show of force. China rolled out its newest military hardware, everything from hypersonic missiles, stealth drones, and next-generation tanks. Just days earlier, Beijing had hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, drawing leaders from Asia, and the Middle East. For analysts, the message was unmistakable. China isn't just flexing its military and diplomatic muscle, it was proposing a new world order.

On one hand, cutting-edge military hardware - on the other, investments, energy deals, and security partnerships. Together, they form a package of hard and soft power aimed squarely at the Global South, where Beijing is pitching itself as the alternative to Washington. And among the countries leaning closer is Türkiye. Once firmly anchored in the West, Ankara now finds common ground with Beijing on some of the most divisive global issues from diplomacy in Ukraine, to condemning Israel’s war in Gaza, and its attack on Iran. At Tianjin, the message seemed clear: to cast China as the architect of a new global order. But as Beijing deepens alliances and reshapes power dynamics, the question remains, how will its rivalry with Washington play out in Asia, and across the world?
