The 13-year-long Syrian Civil War led to the fall of Damascus to the hands of rebel forces. Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow and been granted asylum on humanitarian ground. The rebel groups on Dec 08 took over the Syrian capital Damascus after President Al-Assad's regime fall. Israel has been closely monitoring the developments in Syria even before the fall of al-Assad’s iron-fisted rule. Although Israel denies it, videos released by IDF showed the troops advancing into Syria beyond the Golan Heights buffer zone. Israeli PM Netanyahu held a briefing on Mount Hermon's summit on Syrian territory, a strategic location overlooking Damascus. The Israeli PM said that the visit was for “assessment to decide on the deployment of the IDF” on Mt Hermon. Netanyahu on Dec 15 announced to double Israel’s population in Golan Heights, a region captured from Syria in the 1967 war. Around 50,000 people live on the Israeli-controlled side of the heights, evenly split between Jews and Druze. Israel has carried out extensive airstrikes on Syria’s military assets since Assad’s fall and has moved into a demilitarized zone inside Syria. The zone was created after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, including the Syrian side of the strategic Mount Hermon summit. Syria's de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, said on Dec 12 that Israel was using false pretexts to justify its attacks on Syria. He stated that he was not interested in engaging in new conflicts as the country focuses on rebuilding. Notably, Israel welcomed the fall of Assad, an ally of its main enemy Iran, but has reacted cautiously to the leading rebel faction, HTS
