Red Cabbage Juice Acid Base Indicator Experiment (Chemistry)

Описание к видео Red Cabbage Juice Acid Base Indicator Experiment (Chemistry)

This video shows you the steps involved in making a color-changing acid-base indicator using red cabbage. An alternative to litmus papers, the molecule which gives the red cabbage its color changes color when exposed to solutions with acidic or basic pH ranges. The color changes are not specific enough to be used to determine a precise pH, so you wouldn't use red cabbage in a titration like you would an indicator such as phenolphthalein, but it is a universal indicator so the color changes do include the entire pH spectrum with several different vibrant colors from red to pink to blue to purple to green to yellow.

▶️ How make a red cabbage juice indicator:
Step 1: Add 1-2 cups of warm water into a blender.

Step 2: Place 3-4 red cabbage leaves into the blender.

Step 3: Blend for 30-60 seconds, until the leaves are chopped into very small pieces.

Step 4: Pour off the red-purple liquid, careful to keep any pieces of cabbage still in the blender. This dark purple liquid is the acid-base indicator.

Step 5: Pour the acid-base indicator into various liquids to test the pH.

▶️ How the red cabbage pH indicator works:
Acid-base indicators change color according to the pH or acidity of the solution. For example, a bright green color indicates a pH between 10-12, a bluish-purple color indicates a pH between 6-8, and a pinkish-red color indicates a pH between 2-4. These colors allow you to begin experimenting with acid-base chemistry.

For example, if you take the neutral solution and add acid to it, you see that the solution turns pink, indicating that it is now acidic. However, if you now take a basic solution and add it to this acidic solution, it slowly turns back to a purplish blue, indicating that the base neutralized the acid.
