Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain' rises 463 meters above sea level and is the landmark of the small town of Grundarfjörður. It is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’, due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location. Kirkjufell takes its name from its resemblance to a church steeple, sharpened at the top with long curved sides. From other angles, the mountain has been compared to a pointed hat or even a freshly scooped ice cream. Peaking at 463 metres, 1519 feet, Kirkjufell is an impressive landmark. Throughout the centuries, Kirkjufell’s striking slopes have acted as a visual landmark for seafarers and travellers. More recently, it has attracted amateur and professional photographers alike. Within walking distance from Kirkjufell is the serene and perfectly located waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, or 'Church Mountain Falls', an excellent subject for photographers who can easily frame the mountain in the background. Despite its relatively diminutive height, Kirkjufellsfoss’ three-steps, gentle flow, and dramatic differences between seasons make it as impressive as some of Iceland’s larger waterfalls.

It is possible to climb Kirkjufell mountain and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes or so to reach the top. The view from the top is quite spectacular. The hike towards the peak is not for those who suffer from vertigo because it is quite treacherous. It is NOT recommended in wet conditions as it will get very slippery and hazardous. There have been three fatal accidents in the mountain and two in recent years. The first fatal accident was in 1945 where a local 20 year old man fell to his death. Then during the summer og 2017 a tourist fell to his death and another traveller in the fall of 2018.

2018 Accident at Mount Kirkjufell:

On September 18, 2018 A foreign hiker fell to his death in Mt. Kirkjufell. The man was hiking with at least one other hiker when the accident happened. The nationality or age of the man have not been made public. Foreign hiker was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Police in West Iceland the accident took place shortly after ten in the morning. According to initial reports the man had been hiking with a group when he fell down sheer cliffs in the mountain side, but according to the latest statement from the Police the man was climbing the mountain with a second man when the two lost sight of each other. The man died after falling down steep cliffs. Paramedics and Police had arrived at the foothills of the mountain shortly after 11:00, while members of a specialized mountain rescue ICE-SAR battalion arrived at the site with an Coast Guard helicopter at noon. Due to difficult conditions and strong winds in the mountain sides the helicopter could not reach the site where the accident took place. Members of ICE-SAR carried the man down the steep mountain. The accident is being investigated by the Police in West Iceland.
This is the second fatal hiking accident in the slopes of Mt. Kirjufell in little more than a year. In July 2017 a 43 year old Polish woman fell to her death in steep cliffs in the western slopes of the mountain.

Woman who fell to her death in West Iceland was Polish

The foreign tourist who suffered a fatal hiking accident in Kirkjufell mountain on Friday was a 43 year old Polish woman, local news site Mbl.is reports. The woman fell 50 meters in sheer cliffs. The woman's name was Agata Bornikowski, born 1974. She was travelling in Iceland with her husband and another couple, according to information provided by ICE-SAR. Three of them climbed the mountain on Friday. The accident happened in the southern slopes of Kirkjufell mountain near the town of Grundarfjörður in Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. The Coast Guard's rescue helicopter was sent to the scene and the crew managed to heave the woman aboard. She was brought to a hospital in Reykjavík but she succumbed to her injuries.
